Rehabilitation in adult scoliosis: selected case series illustrating options for complexities associated with adult scoliosis

چکیده
Adults with scoliosis often present with multiple complications and co-morbidities affecting their quality of life. The primary source of pain and dysfunction may or not be directly related to the scoliosis but may be related to secondary or tertiary problems. Success for conservative treatment in adults with scoliosis hinges on the clinician’s ability to systematically identify direct and indirect biomechanical contributors to pain and dysfunction, and then subsequently develop “bullet-point” treatment strategies to address the identified deficits, all under the umbrella of the “big picture” of the scoliosis. The resultant multi-faceted approach is often very individualized and while the personalized care may yield good individual outcomes it makes for challenging research. This being said, we believe that case histories with good outcomes can plant seeds for larger studies that can germinate and bloom into exciting options for adults with scoliosis. We will present a series of individual case histories illustrating positive outcomes of conservative management with for adults with scoliosis. We chose to present some “non-classic” cases to illustrate that in adult scoliosis – like in life – the picture is usually complicated. We hope the case histories may inspire the audience to:

We report the case of a 73-year-old female with severe degenerative scoliosis and back and leg pain that wassuccessfully treated with stand- alone cages via an extreme lateral transpsoas approach. This patient had declinedopen surgery and instrumentation due to her advanced age concerns about potential side effects.

Purpose: Scoliosis is one of the most common spinal deformities that affect chest wall mechanics. Scoliosis results in ventilator disorders and respiratory muscle weakness. However, the mechanism of these disorders is still unknown. The main objective of this study was to identify the intensity of respiratory muscles activity in patients with idiopathic scoliosis compare with healthy indi...

The rapid increase of elderly population has resulted in increased prevalence of adult scoliosis. Adult scoliosis is divided into adult idiopathic scoliosis and adult degenerative scoliosis. These two types of scoliosis vary in patient age, curve pattern and clinical symptoms, which necessitate different surgical indications and options. Back pain and deformity are major indications for surgery...

Introduction: The differential diagnosis of idiopathic and syringomyelia associated scoliosis is important because corrective surgery for scoliosis associated with syringomyelia prior to management of syringomyelia can be dangerous. There are important imaging indicators for diagnosis of syringomyelia associated with scoliosis. A few of these indicators have been assessed in our study. Methods...
